Recent Survey off the Illawarra-Cronulla Coastline

Quick overview:

A seabed survey was conducted over the Christmas/New Year period, in the Illawarra-Cronulla offshore wind zone area, raising questions about transparency and process.

No feasibility licenses have been announced for this declared zone. This is why we wondered who had commissioned this survey. Typically these types of surveys are undertaken by developers after securing a licence.

Update: The government maintains the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) is responsible for the survey.

We ask:

Why is the AHO surveying this area when it was surveyed within the last 30 or so years and other areas of the Australian coastline have not been surveyed for over 150years (conservative figure)?

Why would the AHO hire a company, specializing in offshore wind surveys, to carry out the work in this particular area?

We’ll leave it to you to draw your own conclusions….

Full Story:

The 7-Oceans vessel, responsible for conducting the survey, is owned by Infinity Oceans, a seasoned offshore wind survey company. The seabed mapping took place within the Illawarra offshore wind zone, stretching beyond Cronulla, deeper into Sydney’s waters, and extending out to the continental shelf. The survey activities were confirmed by grid-like mapping patterns and maritime warnings in the area.
