National Spotlight On Offshore Microplastics
National spotlight on offshore wind microplastics and marine health – In The Australian on 19th May 2026
Microplastics are a growing environmental issue.
To be clear — offshore wind is not the number one source of microplastics. Major sources include clothing, tyres, urban runoff and other industrial activities.
However, this issue has highlighted an area we believe is important to raise awareness about:
What are the cumulative impacts of placing large-scale infrastructure projects in highly biodiverse marine environments?
The discussion extends beyond blade shedding and includes broader infrastructure such as:
• Turbine coatings and erosion
• Cables and substations
• Transmission infrastructure
• Ongoing monitoring and assessment
As projects increase in size and scale, we believe these impacts should be studied, measured and openly discussed.
A huge thank you to Susie Crick and marine conservationists continuing to advocate for ocean health and evidence-based environmental protection.
Healthy oceans should remain central to every energy discussion.
